Overview
In 2016, the Advanced Carbons Council conducted what was then the first broad global survey of the graphene sector. It was initiated in part because several national government agencies wanted input from key stakeholders in order to develop better graphene policy. That survey gathered more than 440 responses from industry and academia across 57 countries, and produced the first real snapshot of how producers, researchers, developers, users, investors, and government representatives viewed the emerging commercialisation process. It already showed strong consensus on the essential requirements for commercialisation: scale, quality, lower cost, standards, health and safety, government support, and practical applications.
By 2020, the survey had matured into a broader and more structured review of the ecosystem, with more than 800 individual contributions. It examined participants, applications, performance attributes, commercial forms of graphene, material characteristics, standards and business practices, and obstacles to adoption. The question was no longer simply when graphene would become commercial, but which forms were being used, which applications mattered most, which performance attributes were most valued, and which barriers were still slowing adoption.
The 2024 report captured a much more professionalised sector, one transitioning from an academic-led research area into a more fully commercialised advanced-material industry. It introduced a more strategic reading of the results by comparing producers, consumers, and researchers. That distinction matters: producer interest reflects technology push, while consumer and end-user interest is a far stronger indicator of technology pull.
The 2026 survey gives the clearest picture yet that graphene is entering a new commercial phase. It adds 576 new respondents and brings the series past 2,350 total responses. With ten years of longitudinal data, 28 sectors tracked, and nine regions ranked, it adds several new analytical layers, including revenue status, value-chain position, market-building priorities, standards and verification, customer adoption drivers, and regional opportunity.
