Emerging nano-carbons are the frontier of the carbon family, a fast moving research field of novel structures that sit beyond the established graphene, nanotube and nanodiamond families. The group opens with fullerenes and buckyballs, the closed carbon cages that first showed carbon could form discrete molecules, and it now reaches across a wide range of shapes and dimensions. It helps to group them by what they do. For energy storage, carbon aerogels offer ultralight, highly porous networks with enormous surface area for electrodes and supercapacitors, while carbon onions, concentric nested shells of carbon, deliver fast charge and discharge. For biomedicine and drug delivery, carbon nanospheres and carbon nanohorns provide stable, high surface area carriers that can be loaded and functionalised for targeted therapies and imaging. For sensing, imaging and optoelectronics, carbon quantum dots stand out for bright, size tunable photoluminescence and low toxicity, which suits them to bioimaging, sensors, LEDs and photovoltaics. For structural and filtration uses, carbon foams give rigid, lightweight, thermally stable scaffolds, carbon nanosheets bring high surface area two dimensional platforms for membranes, catalysis and composites, and carbon nanocones add sharp, field emitting geometries to the mix. These materials share tunable optical and electronic behaviour, quantum confinement and high surface area, and they are distinct from the two dimensional MXenes, which have their own page. Most remain at research or early commercial stage, which is exactly why the category is worth watching.
