Where carbon fits in packaging

Graphene is the primary in-scope carbon in packaging, used as a barrier additive and functional coating in films and containers. Because graphene is impermeable even to helium, oriented graphene nanoplatelets in a polymer film sharply cut oxygen and moisture transmission, and published studies report oxygen transmission reductions of 50 to 90% at low loadings, extending food shelf life without adding significant weight. This barrier role is the main commercial driver, though graphene-infused packaging is still at an early commercial stage.

Carbon nanotubes bring anti-static and conductive properties to packaging for sensitive electronics, forming a percolation network at under 3% by weight, well below the loading that carbon black requires. Biochar is being explored as a bio-based filler in packaging polymers to lower fossil-carbon content, and carbon fibre has limited use in structural packaging for precision industrial components. Carbon black, the conventional conductive filler, is out of scope.

The graphene-infused packaging market was valued at about $495 million in 2024 and is forecast to grow at roughly 13.5% a year to 2034, a small but growing share of a multi-billion-dollar global packaging industry. The underlying graphene material market is expanding quickly, at an estimated 39% a year to 2033, which is expected to lower nanoplatelet prices and widen adoption in barrier and anti-static packaging.
