Where carbon fits in sporting goods

Carbon fibre is the dominant in-scope carbon in sporting goods, used across cycling, racket sports, golf, rowing, winter sports, fishing and archery. Its high stiffness-to-weight ratio lets designers tailor stiffness, compliance and weight at the same time in ways metal cannot, producing equipment that improves performance while meeting weight regulations. A top-end road bicycle frame can weigh under 700 grams complete, around 40 to 50% lighter than an aluminium equivalent.

The same advantage runs through the rest of the category: golf shafts of about 60 to 80 grams replace steel shafts near 120 grams, a competition rowing shell weighs around 14 kilograms in carbon fibre against 35 to 40 kilograms in wood or glass-reinforced plastic, and carbon fibre fishing rods combine tip sensitivity with casting backbone. Graphene is added to high-end tennis rackets and cycling frames as a matrix modifier that redistributes mass and tunes vibration damping and stiffness. Carbon nanotubes and nanodiamonds remain at an early or research stage in sporting goods.

Carbon fibre composites in sporting goods, measured on a finished-parts basis, were valued at about $3.2 billion in 2024, while the raw carbon fibre and fabric used in the sector was worth about $660 million and is growing at roughly 5.8% a year to 2031. The wider sports composites market, in which carbon fibre dominates, was about $4.04 billion in 2024. Global carbon fibre consumption in sporting goods reached around 25,100 tonnes in 2024.
