Advanced materials testing centre completed
A new advanced materials testing centre has been completed in Atom Valley, focusing on the development and testing of graphene.
The Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing Centre (SMMC) at Kingsway Business Park in Rochdale is now complete. This facility will enable scientists to test materials for applications in medicine, electronics, and construction, facilitating the transition from laboratory discoveries to commercially viable products. The centre is projected to contribute £107 million to the regional economy once it becomes fully operational in 2027.
The SMMC will collaborate with the University of Manchester, a prominent institution in advanced materials research. Professor John Holden, vice-president for civic engagement and innovation at the university, emphasized the centre's role in helping scientists test new materials for strength, electrical conductivity, and durability in real-world conditions.
Graphene, a material discovered at the University of Manchester in 2004, exemplifies the potential of such research. Despite its promise, graphene's development has been limited by production costs. The SMMC aims to address similar challenges by supporting advanced materials research and development.
Julie Murphy, chief executive of Rochdale Council, envisions the SMMC as a catalyst for establishing an innovation district around the facility. The goal is to inspire local students to pursue higher education and return to contribute to Rochdale's growth.
The SMMC represents the first major development in the Atom Valley district, anticipated to create thousands of jobs near the M62 in Oldham, Rochdale, and Bury. Atom Valley is a Mayoral Development Zone in Greater Manchester, designed to attract private-sector investment through devolved powers. Paul Ormerod, chair of the Atom Valley Mayoral Development Zone, highlighted the project's aim to develop a cluster of advanced manufacturing companies, fostering economic revival in the region.
Plans for Atom Valley include a new tram-train line connecting Bury, Heywood, Rochdale, and Oldham, further supporting regional development.
