Cygnet Texkimp develops 500kg VHD PAN precursor unwinding creel to increase output

Cygnet Texkimp has developed a 500kg VHD PAN precursor unwinding creel aimed at enhancing efficiency in carbon fibre production. This innovation is significant for carbon fibre manufacturing as it allows for the handling of larger precursor volumes, potentially reducing production downtime and costs.

Cygnet Texkimp develops 500kg VHD PAN precursor unwinding creel to increase output

Cygnet Texkimp, a leader in fiber handling and composites technology, has introduced a very heavy duty (VHD) creel solution capable of managing 500kg packages of PAN precursor fiber. This development is part of an industry collaboration aimed at enhancing efficiency in carbon fiber manufacturing.

The newly developed creel will unwind bobbins of PAN precursor fiber into carbon fiber production lines, marking a significant advancement for the industry, which has traditionally used packages weighing up to 350kg. This innovation is expected to reduce operational downtime and improve efficiency by decreasing the frequency of package changeovers, thus allowing longer continuous run cycles.

Cygnet Texkimp has established itself as a market leader in VHD creels for the carbon fiber industry, with over 70 VHD creels in operation globally, processing more than 24,000 bobbins of fiber.

Peter Stevenson, Director of Projects at Cygnet Texkimp, stated that the 500kg bobbin enhances line efficiency by extending continuous operation times. The creel also supports manufacturers in processing higher tow count fibers, such as 24k or 48k tows, and achieving faster line speeds by increasing the size and weight of the PAN precursor bobbin.

The development of this capability is part of Cygnet Texkimp's ongoing industry consultation, driven by the global growth in carbon fiber production capacity. The technology meets the needs of high-volume industrial applications worldwide, many of which aim to establish new sovereign capabilities.

The creel solution includes an operator-managed lifter loader system for unloading and loading PAN fiber packages, with an option for a bespoke handling solution that offers higher automation. It features an electronic tension control system with a closed-loop dancer arm mechanism to maintain near-constant fiber tension during the unwinding process.
