Aston University and Jesmonite to research cement alternatives
Researchers at Aston University are collaborating with Jesmonite to explore biochar as a sustainable alternative to cement.
Aston University has partnered with Jesmonite Ltd to explore the use of low carbon acrylic materials as potential alternatives to cement in construction. The collaboration will investigate the integration of biochar to enhance these materials for broader application in building facades and surfaces.
The project will involve researchers from the Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) and the Department of Civil Engineering at Aston University. Their goal is to redevelop Jesmonite's materials to further reduce their carbon footprint, aligning with sustainable construction practices.
Professor Mujib Rahman from Aston University's Department of Civil Engineering highlighted the alignment of this project with the university's research capabilities, emphasizing the real-world application of their expertise in sustainable materials. He noted the rewarding aspect of supporting Jesmonite Ltd in advancing towards low-carbon products.
Piran Littleton, Managing Director of Jesmonite Ltd, expressed enthusiasm about the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). He emphasized the opportunity to utilize Aston University's specialist facilities and research expertise to examine their materials at a molecular level. This collaboration aims to expand Jesmonite's market reach within the construction sector.
