BC Tech finalist PointValues turns mustard waste into higher-value materials

Vancouver-based POINTVALUES is pioneering the conversion of mustard press cake, a byproduct of mustard seed oil extraction, into valuable carbon materials. Using pyrolysis, the company transforms this agricultural residue into biochar and bio-oil. Biochar has potential applications in carbon sequestration, soil remediation, and water treatment, while bio-oil could serve as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels and chemical feedstocks.

POINTVALUES distinguishes itself by utilizing press cakes with unique chemical compositions, which may enhance conversion efficiency and reduce energy requirements. The company has completed lab-scale proof of concept, employing analytical methods such as FTIR and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to confirm consistent biochar production across varying conditions. The biochar's physicochemical properties and the bio-oil's distinct chemical profile suggest potential for high-end, specialized markets.

Supported by a Mitacs research project, POINTVALUES is developing a data-driven approach to optimize its process and identify promising applications. The company also operates a lab and testing equipment business, supplying sensors and analytical instruments to sectors like chemical and environmental industries. Despite challenges in gaining credibility against established brands, POINTVALUES has placed its equipment in institutions like the University of British Columbia to build trust.

Financing the research remains challenging, with the need for matching funds to support extended research periods. However, being based in British Columbia offers connections to researchers and programs focused on clean technology and carbon reduction. POINTVALUES envisions a scalable model allowing agricultural businesses to convert local waste into valuable products.
