Biochar research facility inaugurated at Neri

A new Biochar Research and Training Facility has been inaugurated at the College of Horticulture and Forestry (COH&F), Neri, part of Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni. This facility aims to advance research on carbon sequestration and soil health, contributing to sustainable biomass management and climate change mitigation.

ProClime Services Private Limited established the facility under a Memorandum of Agreement with the university and the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department. The initiative focuses on utilizing forest biomass to address forest fire hazards while promoting environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

The biochar production unit, with a capacity of 1.5 tonnes per day, was inaugurated by Suresh Kumar, MLA, Bhoranj, alongside Sushil Kumar Singla, Secretary, Department of Environment, Science and Technology, and Nishant Mandotra, Conservator of Forests. Faculty from IIT Roorkee and representatives from ProClime were present, highlighting the collaborative effort.

Biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from biomass, plays a crucial role in improving soil fertility, enhancing water retention, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Neri facility will convert local biomass, such as pine needles and bamboo, into biochar for agricultural use, reducing forest fire risks and offering research and training opportunities in biochar technology.

The project is expected to create local livelihood opportunities through sustainable biomass collection and processing, while enhancing the university's research on climate-resilient agriculture. The Himachal Pradesh Forest Department will support biomass collection and ensure regulatory compliance, while the university will facilitate research and provide land for the facility. ProClime Services will manage the facility and offer technical expertise.

The establishment of this 1.5 TPD Biochar Research and Training Facility marks a milestone in integrating carbon-offset technologies into academic and rural settings in Himachal Pradesh.
