CO2 Sync launches emissions-free energy plant in Price

CO2 Sync has launched a new emissions-free energy plant in Price, Utah, focusing on advanced carbon materials. The Carbon County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 11 to welcome the facility, which aims to address forest management, soil health, and renewable energy through innovative processes.

Darrell Huntsman, CEO of CO2 Sync, explained the company's dual approach to tackling forest fires and improving soil health. The process involves converting beetle-killed trees into biochar through pyrolysis, a method that heats organic materials without oxygen, resulting in carbon-rich biochar. This biochar enhances soil by retaining nutrients and beneficial bacteria at plant roots.

Huntsman highlighted the benefits of biochar in regenerative farming, noting that it helps reduce the runoff of synthetic fertilizers by keeping nutrients at the root level. In addition to producing biochar, the CO2 Sync system captures heat from the pyrolysis process to generate clean electricity with zero emissions.

Although CO2 Sync is based in Carbon County, the Price facility represents the start of a larger expansion plan across Utah and the United States. Following the ribbon-cutting, attendees toured the plant and participated in a company-hosted lunch.
