ÉireComposites has produced composite components for the European Space Agency's (ESA) Altius satellite, which is designed to monitor atmospheric ozone and trace gases.

The Galway-based company manufactured three carbon fiber stray light baffles for the satellite's optical instrument. These components are the first external satellite parts and the largest space hardware made in Ireland to be launched.

The baffles are engineered to protect the satellite's instruments from stray light outside the field of view. A periscope mirror system directs incoming light into the instrument, with precise manufacturing tolerances and finishing processes tailored for space-based optical systems.

Altius, or Atmospheric Limb Tracker for Investigation of the Upcoming Stratosphere, will employ limb-sounding techniques and a high-resolution spectral imager to provide vertical profiles of ozone and other gases. ESA notes that these measurements aid weather forecasting and long-term climate monitoring.

Ozone in the atmosphere absorbs ultraviolet radiation, including UV-B rays linked to health and environmental risks. Monitoring ozone levels helps assess changes in the upper atmosphere.

Part of ESA’s Earth Watch programme, the Altius mission is mainly funded by Belgium, with contributions from Canada, Luxembourg, and Romania. The satellite is set to launch in 2028 from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Altius satellite represents a significant milestone for Irish involvement in space exploration. The stray light baffles are the first optical subsystem made in Ireland and the largest satellite components produced in the country to be launched. This project highlights the role of Irish advanced manufacturing in supporting international space missions and future innovations.
