First Graphene aims to bridge gap between graphene's promise and industrial use
First Graphene has acquired MITO Material Solutions' assets, equipment, intellectual property, and product lines, expanding its portfolio with functionalised graphene oxide.
First Graphene Ltd (ASX:FGR, OTCQB:FGPHF) is advancing industrial-scale production of graphene to meet the growing demand for decarbonization in construction and other sectors. Graphene, a two-dimensional form of carbon, offers unique mechanical, electrical, thermal, and barrier properties. First Graphene's efforts focus on integrating graphene into cement, composites, coatings, and advanced materials markets.
The European Commission-backed Graphene Flagship has been working to transition graphene from academic research to practical applications in various industries, including aerospace, automotive, and electronics. For industrial markets, graphene is often used in the form of nanoplatelets or functionalized derivatives to enhance material properties such as strength, weight, and conductivity.
First Graphene operates a manufacturing facility in Henderson, Western Australia, with a production capacity of up to 100 tonnes per annum. The company offers its PureGRAPH product range in various forms, including powders and dispersions. It has secured regulatory approvals in the EU, UK, and Australia, with US EPA approval pending.
In the cement and concrete sector, First Graphene's PureGRAPH has demonstrated the potential to reduce cement usage while maintaining strength. A 2026 UK trial with FP McCann and Breedon Group used 40 tonnes of graphene-enhanced cement to produce over 10,000 roof tiles, achieving up to 8% reduction in cement use and 14% reduction in carbon emissions.
First Graphene has signed a memorandum of understanding with Sixth Element Material Technology to distribute PureGRAPH CEM in China, contingent on meeting sales targets. The agreement may lead to a joint venture or licensing arrangement, with local manufacturing possible after reaching 500 tonnes in sales.
The company has also expanded its US presence by acquiring MITO Material Solutions, adding functionalized graphene oxide and hybrid additives to its portfolio. This acquisition brings existing customers in the sporting goods sector and potential applications in defense and aerospace.
First Graphene's strategy includes focusing on coatings for geotextiles through the acquisition of Ionic Industries and Imagine Intelligent Materials. The company plans to commission a coating line and rebuild customer relationships to generate sales in environmental infrastructure and energy storage.
The company has updated its agreement with distributor Bisley for exclusive rights in the Australian and New Zealand cement markets. Bisley will assist in introducing new liquid additives, with commercial release expected in late 2026.
Financially, First Graphene reported unaudited income of A$135,000 for the June 2026 quarter, with operating cash outflow at A$734,000. The company forecasts revenue growth and aims to convert technical validation into recurring sales across its markets.
First Graphene's next development stage will depend on its ability to secure commercial supply arrangements and expand its market presence in China, the US, and other regions. The company aims to achieve revenue growth that outpaces operating expenditure, reducing reliance on external funding.
