First look at Nusantara Battery's new power pack co-developed with Malaysia

The Nusantara Battery, a graphene-infused NMC lithium-ion pouch cell battery, has been co-developed by Malaysia and Indonesia. This collaboration is led by NanoMalaysia Bhd (NMB) through its subsidiary Gigafactory Malaysia Sdn Bhd (GMSB) and Indonesia’s National Battery Research Institute (NBRI). The battery was unveiled at the 4th ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) in Sepang, though specific technical details remain undisclosed as testing is ongoing.

Malaysia's contribution to the Nusantara Battery focuses on battery formulation, graphene technology, and cell development. Indonesia complements this with its extensive experience in NMC active-material production, leveraging its position as the holder of the world's largest nickel reserves.

The project underscores the importance of collaboration in advancing battery technology within ASEAN. Dr. Rezal Khairi Ahmad, CEO of NMB Group, emphasized the need for partnerships across various sectors to build a competitive and resilient regional battery value chain.

The development of the Nusantara Battery was initiated through a memorandum of understanding signed at ABTC 2025. This agreement outlines the framework for technology transfer, joint research, testing, standardization, education, and industrial training.

GMSB is also advancing towards small-scale commercial production of a graphene-enhanced lithium-ion battery. According to Dr. Rezal, these battery cells can enable an electric vehicle to achieve a driving range of up to 640 km and a full charge in just 12 minutes. At ABTC, NMB Group announced collaborations with Montavista Energy Technologies Corporation, Axium Industries, Milan Utama Sdn Bhd, Neoron Energy Network, and Arya Energy Sdn Bhd.
