GMG Releases Long Life Battery Cycling Data

Researchers released data showing graphene-enhanced batteries have achieved extended life cycles, demonstrating improved performance compared to traditional battery technologies.

GMG Releases Long Life Battery Cycling Data

Graphene Manufacturing Group Ltd. (TSXV: GMG) (OTCQX: GMGMF) has released new data on its graphene-based battery technology, developed in collaboration with Rio Tinto and supported by the Battery Innovation Center (BIC) in Indiana, USA. The data highlights the performance of GMG's G®CELLS, which are 1 Ah cells capable of fast charging in six minutes.

The cycling data, collected by BIC, shows that G®CELLS maintain performance without degradation after 489 cycles, each involving a six-minute charge and discharge. In comparison, a Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) battery degraded to 86% of its original capacity within 64 cycles under the same conditions. This suggests that G®CELLS last over seven times longer than LTO cells in similar tests.

The voltage and capacity curves for G®CELLS, as shown in Figure 2, remain stable during approximately 80% of the discharge cycle, unlike the LTO cells. This stability supports easier control of constant power discharge, a valuable trait for battery performance.

Additional performance data, including energy density, temperature, and resistance, is depicted in Figure 3. While the energy density of G®CELLS is currently lower than previously reported, GMG aims to optimize it back to around 50 Wh/kg at a 10C charge rate. The low resistance of G®CELLS results in minimal temperature increase during high-speed charging, contrasting with the higher resistance and temperature rise seen in LTO cells.

Bob Galyen, GMG Director and former CTO of CATL, emphasized the exceptional cycling stability of G®CELLS, noting their zero measurable capacity fade after 489 cycles. Craig Nicol, CEO of GMG, highlighted the importance of these results for the graphene battery program, particularly in overcoming barriers to electric vehicle and energy storage adoption.

Jack Perkowski, Chairman of GMG, acknowledged the progress made in battery development, supported by BIC's independent data and Rio Tinto's collaboration. GMG continues to focus on scaling up its technology and optimizing energy density as it moves towards commercialization.

GMG is an Australian clean-technology company specializing in energy-saving and storage solutions using graphene produced through its proprietary process. The company is advancing its graphene battery technology with financial support from the Australian Government and aims to improve lithium-ion battery performance with graphene additives.
