IISc shows graphene quantum dot LED with record blue emission efficiency

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science published a graphene quantum dot LED achieving 23% external quantum efficiency in the blue spectrum in Nature Photonics, using sulfur-functionalized, size-controlled graphene quantum dots to reduce non-radiative recombination. The result advances graphene quantum dots as viable blue emitters for display applications, with the team already collaborating with Samsung Display on integration into commercial display stacks.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has developed a graphene quantum dot LED that achieves an external quantum efficiency of 23 percent in the blue spectrum. This represents a new efficiency record for graphene-based light emitters. The research, published in Nature Photonics, highlights the use of size-controlled graphene quantum dots with sulfur surface functionalization to reduce non-radiative recombination pathways. This advancement addresses a critical challenge in the development of next-generation displays, which require high-efficiency blue emitters to work alongside red and green emitters.

Professor Praveen Ramamurthy, the lead author, noted that the team is working with Samsung Display to integrate the technology into display stacks. The project received funding from the Indian Department of Science and Technology and spanned multiple years.
