India's first 120 TPA carbon fiber demo plant to be built in Amravati

The Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have formalized an agreement to establish India's first 120 tonnes per annum (TPA) Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant at the PM MITRA Park in Amravati, Maharashtra.

This initiative will create a National Centre for Carbon Fibre Technology Development, featuring a carbon fibre technology demonstration plant, an advanced R&D center, a testing and characterization laboratory, a technology validation and scale-up facility, a skill development and training center, and an industry support and technology transfer platform.

The facility is designed to bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial production by enabling pilot-scale manufacturing, product development, process validation, and technology transfer. It aims to accelerate the adoption of indigenous carbon fibre technology across various Indian industries.

Carbon fibre is a high-performance material utilized in sectors such as aerospace, defense, automotive, renewable energy, railways, infrastructure, hydrogen storage, and sports equipment. The project is anticipated to reduce India's reliance on imports, bolster domestic manufacturing, conserve foreign exchange, and enhance the country's strategic capabilities.

Dr. T. V. Sreekumar, Director of BTRA, stated that the initiative will support research and innovation, foster collaboration between industry and academia, strengthen startups and MSMEs, and contribute to building a skilled workforce for the advanced composites sector.
