SHD Mooresville facility to quadruple Cambium U.S. composites manufacturing

SHD Composites' Mooresville facility will increase Cambium's U.S. composites production capacity fourfold.

SHD Mooresville facility to quadruple Cambium U.S. composites manufacturing

Cambium (El Segundo, Calif., U.S.) is set to enhance its U.S. composites manufacturing capabilities with a new 60,000-square-foot facility in Mooresville, North Carolina. This expansion will significantly increase the production capacity of its SHD (Sleaford, U.K.) division, acquired six months ago, by fourfold. The Mooresville facility will focus on rapid manufacturing, integrating processes from resin mixing to prepreg testing and development, ensuring swift customer response times.

The facility, expected to be operational by late 2026, is part of Cambium's strategy to expand its global footprint in the advanced materials sector. This follows the recent commissioning of advanced prepreg and film-coating lines at SHD's U.K. site, which also aimed to boost production capabilities.

Cambium's expansion reflects a coordinated effort to scale up secure manufacturing capacity across the U.S., U.K., and EU. The company aims to establish a dominant advanced materials platform to support critical systems in defense, space, and high-performance industries.

Simon Waddington, Cambium's co-founder and CEO, emphasized the increasing demand for high-performance advanced materials, noting that industries such as defense and aerospace require suppliers capable of rapid adaptation. "Programs that once measured progress in years now demand weeks," Waddington stated.

The expansion aligns with the growing interest in TPC stamp forming, a process gaining traction in aerospace and mobility for its efficiency and automation. Additionally, a recent study highlights the time efficiency of using prepreg with A&P's TX-45 reinforcement over traditional methods, underscoring the industry's shift towards advanced composites.
