Singapore accepts first composite superstructure for Victory combat ship
Swedish defense contractor Saab and Singapore's Penguin Shipyard International have delivered the first carbon-fiber composite superstructure for the Republic of Singapore Navy’s Victory-class Multi-Role Combat Vessel program. This integration of carbon-fiber materials into naval shipbuilding offers advantages such as reduced weight and radar cross-section, which are critical for modern combat vessel performance and efficiency.
Saab AB, in collaboration with Penguin Shipyard International, has delivered the first composite superstructure and mast for the Republic of Singapore Navy's Victory-class Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV) program. This marks a significant development in the use of carbon-fiber materials in naval architecture.
The MRCV initiative, launched by Singapore in 2023, aims to replace older missile corvettes with six advanced warships. The newly delivered composite section, constructed from carbon-fiber, will be integrated with the steel hull of the lead Victory platform, which ST Engineering is set to launch in October 2025.
This project is Penguin Shipyard International's inaugural foray into composite shipbuilding and naval defense. It also represents the first instance of Saab AB assembling prefabricated composite panels outside of Sweden. Daniel Oscarsson, head of Saab's surface ships business unit, highlighted the benefits of composite superstructures, including reduced weight, lower radar visibility, and decreased life-cycle costs.
Construction of the second vessel is currently underway, with deliveries to the Singaporean navy expected to commence in 2028. The Victory-class MRCV will measure 150 meters in length, with a beam of 21 meters, and accommodate up to 100 personnel.
The vessel will achieve speeds exceeding 20 knots and boast a range of 7,000 nautical miles, powered by an integrated full-electric propulsion system. It will be armed with anti-ship, anti-air, and anti-submarine missiles, alongside a 30mm remote-controlled weapon system and a 76mm automatic cannon.
Additional features include a helicopter deck, hangar, and advanced sensing equipment, ensuring operational readiness and precise navigation.
