Sora Aviation partners with Toray for S-1 eVTOL

Sora Aviation has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Toray Advanced Composites to integrate advanced carbon fiber composite materials into the Sora S-1 eVTOL airframe and proprotor blades. This collaboration was announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, where Sora Aviation is showcasing its future eVTOL aircraft.

The partnership will utilize these materials in both primary and secondary structures of the S-1, aiming to reduce weight while enhancing strength and durability. This integration is expected to improve aircraft performance, increase energy efficiency, and ensure long-term operational reliability.

Furqan Afzal, CEO of Sora Aviation, highlighted that the agreement lays a strong foundation for both prototyping and series production of the S-1. The Sora S-1, described as a clean-sheet design, is a 30-passenger, six-rotor aircraft with one pilot and one cabin crew, optimized for high-capacity routes.

Dr. Stuart Morris, Business Growth Leader – Aerospace at Toray Advanced Composites, emphasized the company's commitment to innovation in the eVTOL sector through advanced composite material solutions. Toray is a leading supplier of carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) prepregs and thermoplastic composites for aerospace, with products used in various Boeing and Airbus aircraft.

The MoU signifies a shared commitment to long-term cooperation and engineering excellence, aiming to strengthen the UK's advanced aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. The UK is noted for having one of the largest aerospace industries globally, contributing significantly to commercial aircraft production.

The Sora S-1 is designed as a zero-emission solution for urban congestion, functioning more as an eVTOL shuttle bus than a taxi, reflecting broader trends in the eVTOL market.
