Bakkafrost Scotland showcases Applecross RAS facility during ministerial visit

Bakkafrost Scotland highlighted its use of advanced carbon materials during a ministerial visit to its recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility in Applecross, Wester Ross. The site, which incorporates pyrolysis technology to convert hatchery waste into biochar, was visited by Scotland’s marine minister, Jim Fairlie, and Highlands and Islands Enterprise chair, Angus Campbell.

The Applecross hatchery is integral to Bakkafrost Scotland’s “one summer at sea” strategy, where salmon are reared longer in controlled freshwater conditions before being moved to sea as larger smolts. This approach aims to reduce sea exposure and improve fish welfare. The facility is powered by renewable energy sources, including hydro and solar, and supports approximately 40 jobs.

Fairlie emphasized the economic significance of aquaculture, noting its role in providing a low-carbon protein source and skilled employment in rural areas. He acknowledged the support from the Scottish Government and Highlands and Islands Enterprise in enabling the site to utilize advanced technology to enhance production and reduce environmental impact.

Ian Laister, managing director, stated that the facility represents a new approach to salmon farming in Scotland, focusing on fish welfare, rural job creation, and long-term investment in the Highlands. The Applecross site is part of Bakkafrost Scotland’s broader investment in freshwater production, renewable energy, and fish welfare.
