California's fire season now extends nearly year-round, prompting the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) to explore innovative solutions. In collaboration with FireWERX and a team of engineers, Cal Fire is testing fully autonomous drones manufactured by Seneca. These drones, constructed from carbon fiber, aim to enhance firefighting capabilities.

Deputy Chief Jack Worden of Cal Fire’s Fire Innovation Unit highlighted the potential of these drones to support firefighters, who traditionally rely on manual tools like backpack pumps and shovels. The drones, each weighing approximately 400 pounds, are designed to alleviate some of the physical burden on personnel.

The drones can carry around 20 gallons of water each. When used collectively, they can deliver between 500 to 1,000 gallons of firefighting foam, enhancing the efficiency of wildfire suppression efforts.
