This initiative is significant for the advanced carbon materials sector because it demonstrates the potential for waste coffee grounds to be converted into valuable materials such as biochar, which can improve soil health and contribute to carbon sequestration efforts.

In the Czech Republic, Coffee!Up is transforming used coffee grounds into valuable raw materials for various industries, including cosmetics, plastics, and renewable fuels. Highlighted by the European Commission, this initiative addresses the massive waste generated by the billions of cups of coffee consumed daily worldwide.

Coffee!Up employs a cascade recycling system, maximizing the value extracted from coffee grounds. This process prevents the loss of oils and nutrients, allowing them to be repurposed into consumer and industrial products. For example, one ton of wet coffee grounds can produce approximately 970 kilos of natural soap, 65.5 kilos of coffee oil, and 371 kilos of biomass.

The extracted coffee oil is used in skincare products developed with NanoSPACE Cosmetics, integrating the byproduct into high-value applications. Additionally, the remaining grounds serve as natural pigments and fillers in the plastics industry, reducing reliance on conventional inputs. PLASTIA, a partner in this effort, uses coffee-derived pigments in sustainable home and garden products, earning design awards and promoting circular design.

Beyond cosmetics and plastics, the residual coffee grounds are converted into biobriquettes and pellets for renewable fuel. This comprehensive approach exemplifies a circular bioeconomy, as the grounds are repurposed across multiple industrial applications, potentially replacing virgin materials like pigments and palm oil.

Coffee!Up's success relies on organized collection, partnering with large coffee consumers such as KPMG and Komerční banka. These partnerships ensure a steady supply of grounds, which are processed and returned as personalized products, making reuse visible to corporate clients.

In a new phase, Coffee!Up is exploring the conversion of coffee grounds into biochar through low-temperature pyrolysis. This process stabilizes carbon and can contribute to CO₂ offsets. The company is also developing fertilizers enriched with coffee-derived biochar, linking urban waste to agricultural improvements.

The European Commission recognizes this initiative as aligning with environmental priorities like waste prevention and decarbonization. Coffee!Up plans to expand its network in Central Europe, launch biochar fertilizers, and explore new applications for coffee oil and biomass. The project demonstrates the potential of reimagining waste as a resource, with implications for other everyday materials.
