Environmental Clean Technologies advances MXene commercialisation with first synthesis runs

Environmental Clean Technologies (ASX: ECT) has confirmed the formation of MXene in its initial synthesis runs at the Gator Point Technology Campus in Texas. These runs, employing flash Joule heating (FJH), achieved yields of up to 31%, marking a shift from theoretical processes to tangible product development.

The synthesis involved 400 grams of feedstock and an equal amount of carbon filler, with each run lasting between 30 and 60 minutes. The company aims to establish a defense-focused production pathway for US-manufactured MXenes, utilizing an acid-free FJH process that could significantly reduce production time compared to traditional chemical etching methods.

Environmental Clean Technologies is currently focused on refining its process, conducting repeatability tests, and providing customer samples. Shareholders will vote on the acquisition of Xenica Materials and a second placement tranche at an extraordinary general meeting on October 22.

Preliminary tests have confirmed MXene formation, with aluminum being preferentially removed and titanium retained. The observed layer spacing is consistent with chlorine-terminated MXene. The company aims to produce approximately 1 kilogram of MXene per day at Gator Point, translating to an annual output of 250–300 kilograms at steady utilization.

The commercial strategy includes an exclusive Rice University license for FJH MXene synthesis, access to a Texas reactor, military end-use rights, and secured US feedstock. An initial 4 kilograms of defense-aligned precursor has been delivered, supporting 15 to 40 synthesis runs, with additional suppliers under consideration.

The customer pathway involves sample production, specification testing, and qualification before securing supply agreements. Potential customers include defense primes, advanced-materials manufacturers, coatings suppliers, aerospace and electronics groups, and energy-storage developers.

The FJH platform also supports Rapid Electrothermal Mineralisation (REM), aimed at eliminating "forever chemicals" from contaminated media. Laboratory work has shown over 99% removal of contaminants from soils and conversion of fluorine to inorganic fluoride on carbon and resin media. A 22-kilowatt pilot system has been constructed, with plans for a field demonstration.

While MXenes are the primary commercial focus, REM offers an additional commercialization route using the same FJH technology. Environmental Clean Technologies is advancing toward consistent production, qualification, and revenue generation.
