Feds allocate $32M for Vancouver Island infrastructure projects

The federal government has allocated over $32 million for infrastructure projects on Vancouver Island, with a notable $7 million directed to the Capital Regional District (CRD) for a pioneering biosolids project.

This initiative will convert biosolids from wastewater treatment into biochar using advanced carbonization technology. According to Ottawa, this process will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, eliminate contaminants in the waste, sequester carbon, and produce a carbon-rich material potentially useful in construction, agriculture, or forestry.

Overall, Ottawa is distributing $152 million to British Columbia from its Strategic Priorities Fund, supporting 54 projects across the province, including 10 on Vancouver Island. These projects include $7 million for a new fire hall in Metchosin, $7 million for a fire hall in Parksville, $5 million for a fire hall redevelopment in Comox, and over $4 million for waterfront street upgrades along Highway 19A in Qualicum Beach.

The funding, although provided by Ottawa, is managed by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities based on the applications it receives. A comprehensive list of this year’s recipients is available on the UBCM website.

CRD chair Cliff McNeil-Smith expressed gratitude to the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, and UBCM for their support in enhancing community resilience through innovative infrastructure investments. He highlighted the biochar project as a step towards national leadership in biosolids management, carbon reduction, and resource recovery, emphasizing its long-term environmental and community benefits.
