FGR wins Pacific Urethanes order for mining fire-retardant use
First Graphene received its first production order from Pacific Urethanes for PureGRAPH, enhancing fire-retardant properties in polyurethane for the Australian mining sector.
First Graphene Limited has secured its inaugural production order from Pacific Urethanes Pty Ltd for the integration of PureGRAPH® into polyurethane formulations. This collaboration aims to enhance fire-retardant properties in applications within the Australian mining and resources sector.
The order signifies a progression from development to commercial manufacturing, marking a new customer and application for PureGRAPH®. According to First Graphene's Managing Director and CEO, Michael Bell, this milestone introduces a significant opportunity to improve the fire retardancy of polyurethane while maintaining its valued properties in the mining industry.
Polyurethane is widely used in mining due to its abrasion resistance, toughness, and flexibility. However, its fire performance can be a limitation, particularly in underground environments. By incorporating PureGRAPH®, Pacific Urethanes aims to address these safety concerns, leveraging graphene's barrier effect to enhance fire resistance.
Research has shown that graphene-enhanced polyurethane systems can reduce heat release, thermal degradation, and smoke generation. This enhancement aligns with the growing demand for materials that combine durability with improved fire performance, particularly in the mining sector.
The global urethane mining products market is valued at approximately US$2.6 billion annually and is expected to reach US$3.8 billion by 2032. This market includes products used in mineral screening, slurry handling, and other high-wear applications. The partnership with Pacific Urethanes provides First Graphene a commercial pathway into this established market by enhancing existing materials rather than introducing new systems.
