Firefly to use carbon fiber composites for aeroshell in SkyFall Mars mission
Firefly Aerospace has secured a $13 million subcontract from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to produce and test the aeroshell for the SkyFall Mars mission, slated for a late 2028 launch. This project will utilize carbon fiber composites for the aeroshell's backshell and heatshield, highlighting the material's critical role in protecting spacecraft during the harsh entry, descent, and landing phases on Mars.
Firefly Aerospace, based in Cedar Park, Texas, has secured a $13 million subcontract from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to produce, test, and deliver the aeroshell for the SkyFall mission to Mars, scheduled for launch in 2028. The mission will utilize carbon fiber composites for the construction of the backshell and heatshield, critical components of the aeroshell.
The SkyFall mission, managed by JPL, aims to deploy three Mars helicopters to conduct scientific research and demonstrate subsurface mapping and resource prospecting. This mission is a step towards future manned missions to Mars.
Firefly's Gloworks innovation lab will spearhead the development of the SkyFall aeroshell, with manufacturing taking place at the Rocket Ranch in Briggs, Texas. The company will leverage its expertise in large composite structures, using carbon fiber composites similar to those employed in its Blue Ghost lunar landers and other spacecraft.
After manufacturing, Firefly will perform extensive structural qualification and flight acceptance testing to ensure the aeroshell meets mission requirements. The aeroshell will then be delivered to JPL for further environmental testing before integration with the SkyFall helicopters.
The SkyFall helicopters will be deployed using the "SkyFall Maneuver," a mid-air release technique that eliminates the need for a landing platform. The helicopters will gather high-resolution imagery and subsurface radar data, enhancing understanding of the Martian terrain and scouting for water ice.
Firefly is also progressing on multiple lunar missions under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, with plans for four upcoming lunar missions. The company has expanded its facilities in Texas to support increased spacecraft production.
The Ingenuity Mars helicopter, a precursor to the SkyFall helicopters, utilized carbon fiber composites extensively, supplied by Toray Advanced Composites. These materials were crucial for the helicopter's airframe and rotor blades, designed to operate in Mars' thin atmosphere.
Ingenuity's rotor system features carbon fiber blades with a lightweight foam core, a design essential for generating lift. The helicopter's landing legs are also made from carbon fiber composite tubes, providing necessary ground clearance.
Firefly's involvement in the SkyFall mission underscores the growing importance of carbon fiber composites in space exploration, highlighting their role in enabling advanced aerospace technologies.
