Highland fisherman develops tick-resistant clothing using advanced material

Graphene, a material composed of a single layer of carbon atoms, is being used to create outdoor clothing designed to protect against ticks. This development comes from Mackenzie Fly Fishing, a company founded by Scott Mackenzie, a five-time World Casting Champion from Inverness. Mackenzie initially explored graphene nearly a decade ago while developing high-performance fly-fishing rods. The company has now applied this technology to clothing after discovering its potential to deter ticks.

The discovery occurred unexpectedly during a stalking trip in the Highlands. Mackenzie noted that while his friend Ryan Rutherford returned covered in ticks, Mackenzie, wearing graphene-infused clothing, had none. This prompted further testing, which confirmed the fabric's anti-tick properties without chemical treatments.

Ryan Rutherford, who has contracted Lyme disease twice, highlighted the effectiveness of the graphene clothing. He noted a significant difference in the number of ticks on his clothing compared to Mackenzie's. Rutherford emphasized the importance of this discovery, especially given his past experiences with Lyme disease.

Graphene is renowned for its strength, light weight, and conductivity. Mackenzie first encountered graphene through Professor Gary Savage, a composites specialist. The graphene-infused fabric also aids in regulating body temperature, enhancing durability, and keeping moisture away from the skin. The clothing line includes a waterproof jacket made with a graphene membrane and recycled ocean plastics.

Ticks pose a growing concern for those spending time in Scotland's countryside. The UK Health Security Agency and the Scottish Government have issued advice on tick precautions during peak season. While most tick bites are harmless, some can transmit Lyme disease, which can lead to severe health complications if untreated.

Mackenzie Fly Fishing, founded nearly 20 years ago by Mackenzie and Angus Morrison, is known for its fly rods and casting equipment. The new clothing range was developed in collaboration with Atacama Design, known for creating clothing for extreme conditions. Mackenzie plans to expand the technology to other outdoor sports and personal protective equipment, aiming to improve comfort and safety in challenging environments.
