How Hong Kong's Graphene-X turned a wonder material into a million-dollar business
Hong Kong-based Graphene-X, founded by Jorge Barros in 2019, built a multi-million-dollar apparel brand around graphene-infused fabrics, generating $500,000 in Kickstarter pre-sales and partnering with Shanghai-based certified graphene producer Kyorene to develop graphene-woven yarns for products ranging from shell jackets to polo shirts. The brand demonstrates a viable commercial pathway for graphene in consumer textiles beyond its established industrial uses in electronics, batteries, and composites, with major outerwear players including Arc'teryx, The North Face, and Stone Island also integrating the material into their pipelines.
Graphene-X, a Hong Kong-based outerwear brand, has successfully integrated graphene into its product line, establishing a million-dollar business. Graphene, a material discovered by Nobel laureates Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, is known for its lightweight, water-repelling, and thermal conductive properties. Initially used in safety industry products and advanced electronics, graphene's application in apparel is gaining traction.
Jorge Barros, the founder and CEO of Graphene-X, transitioned from the wine industry to fashion after being dissatisfied with the performance of traditional outerwear materials. His exploration of new fabrications led him to graphene, which he first encountered at the Canton Fair in Guangzhou. Despite its limited production, Barros saw potential in graphene and began experimenting with it, eventually launching the brand's first product on Kickstarter in 2019.
The initial product, a $399 shell jacket, attracted over 2,000 backers from 80 countries, generating half a million dollars in pre-sales. This success was partly due to a collaboration with Kyorene, a Shanghai-based certified graphene producer. Kyorene's expertise in solar panels and work gloves contributed to the development of a new yarn woven with high-density graphene, leading to products like a $99 polo shirt.
While major outerwear brands such as Stone Island and Arc'teryx are incorporating graphene into their lines, smaller brands like Vollebak are building entire collections around it. Graphene-X continues to innovate by combining graphene with aerogel, a lightweight material that preserves warmth, and expanding into categories like sleeping bags.
The company's growth is also supported by AI chatbot recommendations, which help consumers discover Graphene-X's products through non-emotional brand evaluations. Despite focusing heavily on product development, Barros acknowledges the role of AI in reaching new customers. Graphene-X aims to broaden its audience while maintaining its commitment to function over fashion and scientific innovation.
