The University of Kamalia has launched the SAFER PLUS project, an initiative to convert agricultural waste into clean energy and value-added products, supported by a £1.245 million grant from the UK Government's Innovate UK Energy Catalyst programme. This project focuses on transforming cotton stalks and sugarcane bagasse into biochar, electricity, and other useful by-products, offering a model for sustainable energy generation and rural economic development in Pakistan.

The project will establish a BioHub at the University of Kamalia, which will process approximately 5,000 tonnes of agricultural biomass annually to produce 3,000 to 4,000 tonnes of biochar. This biochar can serve as an alternative to conventional coal in industrial applications, potentially reducing reliance on imported coal. The integrated system will also generate 20 to 40 kilowatts of electricity and surplus heat, which will be supplied to nearby textile dyeing units.

The international consortium leading the project includes Eco Research Ltd, Northumbria University, Prime Eurotech Pvt. Ltd., and the University of Kamalia. The involvement of Northumbria University is expected to enhance research, technological development, and industrial collaboration between Pakistan and the UK.

A key social component of SAFER PLUS is the formation of a women-led Biomass Cooperative, which will manage the collection and transportation of agricultural residues. This initiative aims to provide additional income opportunities for farming families and enhance employment for rural women.

The project addresses the environmental issue of open burning of agricultural residues by promoting a circular bioeconomy. By converting waste into energy and industrial products, it aims to reduce air pollution and make better use of biomass resources.

University of Kamalia Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Yasir Nawab highlighted the project's significance in transforming local resources into energy and economic opportunities. He emphasized the potential for the SAFER PLUS model to be replicated in other agricultural regions, benefiting Southern Punjab and beyond.
