New research facility to minimize forest fires opens in Himachal
A new Biochar Research and Training Facility with a 1.5-ton daily processing capacity opened at Y.S. Parmar University in Himachal Pradesh to address forest fire hazards.
A new Biochar Research and Training Facility has been inaugurated at the College of Horticulture and Forestry in Neri, part of Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Himachal Pradesh. This facility aims to mitigate forest fire risks through the scientific use of biomass.
The establishment of this facility is a collaborative effort between the university, the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, and ProClime Services, based in Chennai. It focuses on sustainable biomass management, climate change mitigation, and advancing research in carbon sequestration and soil health.
The biochar production unit at the facility can process 1.5 tons of biomass per day. Biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from biomass, is known for improving soil fertility, enhancing water retention, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and generating carbon credits.
The facility will process locally sourced biomass, such as pine needles, lantana, bamboo, and other woody residues, converting them into biochar for use in agriculture and horticulture. This initiative not only reduces forest fire risks but also offers research and training opportunities in biochar technology and carbon sequestration.
The project is expected to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities through biomass collection and processing. It also strengthens the university's research in climate-resilient agriculture and natural resource management.
Under the agreement, the Forest Department will oversee sustainable biomass collection with community involvement, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. The university will provide land, support necessary approvals, and conduct research on biochar applications in agriculture and soil health.
The Biochar Research and Training Facility represents a significant advancement in integrating carbon-offset technologies within academic and rural settings in Himachal Pradesh.
