The RM of Ritchot has signed a memorandum of understanding with a biochar manufacturer to extend its landfill operations. This partnership could enhance the use of biochar in waste management, potentially improving sustainability and generating economic benefits.

The Rural Municipality (RM) of Ritchot has formalized a partnership with Carbon Lock Technologies to transform organic waste into biochar, aiming to provide both environmental and economic benefits to the community.

The collaboration began when a Ritchot councillor attended the Manitoba Environmental Industry Association conference in late 2024 and identified Carbon Lock Technologies as a suitable partner. Following several months of discussions, the memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on April 22, 2025, coinciding with Earth Day.

Carbon Lock Technologies plans to utilize a high-heat reactor to convert organic waste from the St Adolphe landfill into biochar. This process involves removing oxygen and hydrogen from biomass, leaving carbon in the form of biochar. The resulting biochar pellets have applications across various industries, including mining, agriculture, construction, horticulture, wastewater treatment, and asphalt production. These applications can generate carbon credits due to the biochar's role in carbon sequestration.

Kevin Danner, founder of Carbon Lock Technologies, stated that the demonstration phase aims to produce approximately 250 tons of biochar within the first 18 to 24 months. The company has applied for the federal carbon dioxide removal credit procurement process and holds patents for its technology in Canada and the United States. A team of eight engineers and researchers is working to advance this technology.

If the trial proves successful, the RM of Ritchot may consider establishing a permanent biochar production facility through a public-private partnership with Carbon Lock Technologies. This decision will be based on the outcomes of the demonstration phase and its potential benefits for the municipality.

Danner highlighted that converting organic waste into biochar could significantly extend landfill lifespans. While the financial benefits remain uncertain, the primary motivation for the RM is the potential to prolong landfill use and contribute to sustainable waste management.

Mayor Chris Ewen emphasized the council's commitment to sustainable development and innovation, noting that the community will not experience changes in waste billing during the MOU's implementation. Ewen expressed confidence in the council's willingness to explore new initiatives for the betterment of the community and the environment.
