Sparc launches graphene additives for manufacturing-focused ESD coatings

Sparc Technologies launched SparcES™, a graphene additive range for ESD and conductive coatings targeting data centres, semiconductor facilities and EV battery plants, following 24 months of internal conductivity testing. The range positions graphene as a potential lower-dosage alternative to carbon black, graphite, carbon nanotubes and metal nanowires in a global ESD and conductive coatings market estimated at US$1.2 billion in 2026.

Sparc Technologies Limited has introduced SparcES™, a new graphene additive range designed for electrostatic discharge (ESD) and conductive coatings. These coatings are intended for use in data centers, semiconductor facilities, and electric vehicle battery manufacturing plants.

The development of SparcES™ followed approximately 24 months of testing various graphene sources and polymer resins to assess electrical conductivity. Sparc Technologies found that the performance of graphene-enhanced coatings varied significantly based on material selection and dosage.

Sparc Technologies suggests that these new graphene additives could serve as alternatives to traditional conductive materials like graphite, carbon black, carbon nanotubes, and metal nanowires. The potential advantages include lower dosage requirements, better material handling, enhanced coating durability, increased opacity, and reduced raw material costs.

This launch expands Sparc's existing graphene coatings portfolio. The company plans to market SparcES™ through its established relationships in the coatings sector, alongside its ecosparc® protective coatings additive. Currently, two customer product development programs utilizing the new additives are underway.

Nick O’Loughlin, Managing Director of Sparc Technologies, highlighted the growing demand for ESD and conductive coatings, driven by investments in manufacturing and digital infrastructure. He noted that Sparc has received numerous inquiries about this segment over the past year, leveraging its expertise in graphene-enhanced protective coatings for product development.

O’Loughlin stated that the public launch follows extensive internal testing and the initiation of customer-led development programs. He expressed enthusiasm about Sparc's participation in a rapidly expanding US$1.65 billion coatings market that complements their protective coatings work.

ESD coatings are engineered to manage electrical charge build-up and safely dissipate static electricity, while conductive coatings provide a direct conductive path to earth for rapid discharge in high-risk environments. These coatings are crucial for protecting sensitive electronic equipment and flammable materials.

Independent market analysis by Orr & Boss projects that the global ESD and conductive coatings market will reach US$1.2 billion by 2026, with data centers and semiconductor manufacturing facilities accounting for about 75% of demand. The market is expected to grow to approximately US$1.65 billion by 2030, supported by ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, and other sectors such as electric vehicle battery production, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, aerospace, healthcare, and laboratory applications.

Sparc Technologies acknowledges that while the market offers growth opportunities, there are challenges in accessing the target addressable market.
