Sparc Technologies' ecosparc graphene additive adopted by Petro Vietnam Paint
Petro Vietnam Paint will incorporate Sparc Technologies' ecosparc graphene additive into its PERAPHENE steel protective coatings range, following in-house and third-party testing that showed improved anti-corrosion performance, with commercial availability expected later in 2026. The adoption adds to ecosparc's growing commercial traction in the graphene-enhanced protective coatings sector, where graphene additives are being validated for marine, offshore, and industrial steel infrastructure applications.
Sparc Technologies has announced that Petro Vietnam Paint will integrate its ecosparc graphene additive into the PERAPHENE range of steel protective coatings. These coatings are designed for use in highly corrosive environments.
The decision by Petro Vietnam Paint follows both internal testing and third-party validation, which indicated improved anti-corrosion performance compared to other graphene materials. The ecosparc-enhanced PERAPHENE products are expected to be commercially available later this year for marine, offshore, industrial, and infrastructure applications.
Nick O’Loughlin, managing director of Sparc Technologies, stated that this development marks a significant step towards wider global adoption of ecosparc in protective coatings. He emphasized that Petro Vietnam Paint's integration of ecosparc into its commercial product line highlights the growing momentum for graphene additives in enhancing the performance and longevity of steel protective coatings.
Vũ Duy Cường, director of Petro Vietnam Paint, mentioned that the company has been assessing graphene materials from various suppliers to optimize the performance and cost-effectiveness of its PERAPHENE systems. The company continues to test ecosparc-containing coatings under more demanding conditions, aiming for equal or improved performance at lower dry film thicknesses compared to existing products. Based on current testing, Petro Vietnam Paint believes ecosparc can meet the stringent performance requirements for its PERAPHENE-branded coatings in highly corrosive environments.
This announcement is part of Sparc's broader efforts to commercialize ecosparc. The company has spent over six years developing the additive to enhance reliability, longevity, safety, and lifecycle cost of critical steel infrastructure. Recently, Sparc secured a commercial pathway with AkzoNobel, which has started offering an ecosparc-enhanced version of its Interzone 954 protective coating in Australia on a made-to-order basis. Interzone 954 is used in offshore oil and gas, offshore wind, marine, and petrochemical applications, and its enhancement with a graphene additive is considered a notable validation of Sparc’s technology.
