Eramet and Gabon sign structured memorandum

Eramet and the Gabonese Republic have signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance the manganese value chain in Gabon. This agreement, signed in Paris, outlines a roadmap for increasing local processing of manganese ore by Eramet Comilog, a subsidiary of Eramet, with the aim of processing up to 700 kt per year by the end of 2031. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the Gabonese economy and create sustainable jobs.

The memorandum proposes three industrial scenarios for manganese processing. The first involves constructing a manganese oxide production plant in the Libreville region, with an initial capacity of 10 kt per year. This plant would support the battery supply chain for electric vehicles and high-performance steels, with potential expansion to 50 kt per year if successful. The second scenario focuses on revamping the Moanda Metallurgical Complex to enhance its profitability and increase production capacity to 70 kt of manganese alloys annually. The third scenario considers building a new manganese alloy plant near the coast, with a capacity of 265 kt per year, pending further investment agreements and energy solutions.

A structured framework has been established to monitor these projects, emphasizing the importance of competitive energy access. The Gabonese Republic is committed to developing necessary energy infrastructure, with project reviews based on economic parameters to ensure profitability. A steering committee will oversee the progress of these initiatives, meeting quarterly to assess developments.

Additionally, Eramet and Eramet Comilog are advancing a biochar production sector in Gabon, utilizing forestry by-products. Biochar serves as a bio-reducing agent, potentially reducing coke imports and decarbonizing manganese processing. A pilot project with Precious Woods began in 2026, with plans for a 10 kt per year production unit by 2029.

The memorandum also includes the launch of a "Made in Gabon" industrial seed fund, aiming to create 3,000 jobs in the industrial sector. This fund will support the growth of Gabonese industrial activities, enhancing the country's industrial ecosystem and competitiveness. Eramet Comilog and Setrag will leverage local purchasing policies to bolster Gabonese industrial companies and job creation.
