First Graphene claims major boost to perovskite solar cell efficiency

First Graphene and Halocell Energy, in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology, reported that adding First Graphene's PureGraph graphene product to Halocell's perovskite solar cells raised efficiency to 30.6% and cut production costs by up to 80% by replacing gold and silver conductors via roll-to-roll processing. The result demonstrates a commercial application for graphene as a functional coating material in photovoltaics, with cost and efficiency metrics that could accelerate perovskite cell adoption over conventional silicon.

First Graphene Limited has reported advancements in the efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) through the integration of graphene. This development, achieved in collaboration with Halocell Energy and the Queensland University of Technology, enhances light absorption and significantly reduces manufacturing and material costs.

According to First Graphene, the inclusion of its PureGraph product has nearly doubled the efficiency of Halocell's PSCs to 30.6%, while production costs have been cut by up to 80%. This improvement is attributed to the compatibility of the graphene formulation with roll-to-roll dispersion technology, which replaces expensive conductor materials like gold and silver.

Last year, First Graphene entered a two-year agreement to supply Halocell with PureGraph for use as a high-performance coating in its cells. This partnership is expected to provide Halocell with a competitive edge in the market.

The company noted that cells utilizing graphene and other carbon-based materials often outperform traditional silicon cells in low and artificial light conditions, including indoor environments. Additionally, perovskite cells offer lower manufacturing, processing, and energy costs, with an energy payback period of approximately six weeks, compared to two years for silicon cells.

Paul Moonie, CEO of Halocell, emphasized the company's commitment to developing a competitive product with its Ambient module series, focusing on strong material science and cost efficiency.

Michael Bell, Managing Director of First Graphene, expressed satisfaction with the progress made by Halocell in applying PureGraph to perovskite solar cell development, highlighting the global potential of their Australian innovation.
