Green Carbon signs MOU for expansion into India, Southeast Asia, and the U.S.
Green Carbon and ATOA Carbon plan to build biochar facilities in India, each processing 50 tons of biomass daily and generating carbon credits.
Green Carbon Inc., a leading Japanese developer of nature-based carbon credits, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ATOA Carbon US LLC, a U.S.-based carbon market advisory firm. This collaboration aims to leverage Green Carbon's project execution capabilities in Southeast Asia and ATOA Carbon's expertise in international carbon markets to develop high-durability carbon credits. These credits are designed to store carbon for over 200 years.
The partnership will focus on establishing industrial Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) facilities in India, Southeast Asia, and the United States. These facilities will utilize Green Carbon's experience in carbon credit projects and ATOA Carbon's proficiency in carbon project assessment and finance. The companies plan to manage the entire project lifecycle, from capital deployment to commercialization.
Biochar is a key component of Green Carbon's international carbon credit strategy. The company is expanding its operations across more than 10 countries, primarily in Southeast Asia. The MOU with ATOA Carbon is a strategic step towards scaling Green Carbon's biochar business to an industrial level, with initial projects planned in Kapadvanj, Gujarat, and Kharagpur, West Bengal, India.
Each biochar facility will feature decentralized, continuous slow-pyrolysis systems capable of processing 50 tons per day of agricultural biomass, equating to 14,400 tons annually. The resulting Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) credits will be registered under rigorous digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) frameworks, including those provided by Isometric, ensuring high integrity and long-term credibility.
Green Carbon and ATOA Carbon also plan to standardize commercial models for selling biochar co-products in local markets and pursue long-term offtake agreements with global buyers for carbon credits. The companies will implement digital MRV systems using satellite data and sensors to ensure traceability from feedstock sourcing to carbon credit issuance.
Following the establishment of initial projects in India, the partnership aims to expand further into Southeast Asia and the United States through 2027. This expansion aligns with Green Carbon's mission to connect high-integrity nature-based projects in Asia with global climate finance, thereby accelerating the growth of its industrial biochar portfolio.
