Integrals Power chosen as LMFP supplier for 9 million euro EU OLiMPUS battery project
Integrals Power has been selected as the LMFP supplier for the EU-funded OLiMPUS battery project, which aims for mass production in Europe by 2032. This development is significant for the advanced carbon materials sector as it involves synthetic graphite anodes, which are crucial for reducing the carbon footprint and enhancing the sustainability of battery production.
The OLiMPUS battery project, funded by the European Union with a budget of 9 million euros, has selected Integrals Power as the supplier for LMFP cathode active material. This initiative, coordinated by SINTEF, a prominent Norwegian research organization, involves 16 partners across the battery value chain, including Volvo Trucks, Magna Steyr, Verkor, Vianode, and Corvus Energy. The project aims to advance the production and industrialization of LMFP cells, with applications in electric vehicles and maritime sectors.
Integrals Power will supply over 150 kg of LMFP material and assist in scaling up manufacturing processes, cell prototyping, and performance validation. The project, running until 2030, will produce over 130 automotive-grade cells at SINTEF’s pilot lines and Verkor's Gigafactory, with energy densities up to 220Wh/kg. Sustainability is emphasized through the use of water as a solvent and synthetic graphite for the anode, reducing the carbon footprint compared to traditional NMC811 chemistry.
Integrals Power's LMFP technology, featuring high manganese content, offers up to 20% greater energy density than conventional LFP, while maintaining cost-effectiveness and safety. This makes it a viable alternative to NMC, which is prevalent in European and North American EV manufacturing. OLiMPUS aims to achieve cell-level costs between 56-65 euros/kWh, and pack-level costs of 67-75 euros/kWh, providing a competitive edge over Chinese manufacturers.
The project targets applications in electric vehicles, shipping, and other sectors, with maritime facing significant decarbonization pressures. Battery-electric propulsion, supported by LMFP's properties, is suitable for various vessels. Integrals Power's range of LMFP and LFP materials is also applicable in defense and grid-scale energy storage, highlighting its versatility across industries.
Behnam Hormozi, Founder and CEO of Integrals Power, emphasized the importance of establishing a sustainable and cost-effective battery supply chain in Europe, independent of critical minerals and Chinese technology. The OLiMPUS project is seen as a foundational step in achieving this goal.
