NOVONIX positions Riverside for bigger role in U.S. battery materials

NOVONIX Limited (ASX:NVX) is focusing its efforts on establishing a robust domestic synthetic graphite supply chain in North America. This strategy was reinforced on 1 September 2026, when the Riverside synthetic graphite anode active material project was selected for a South Korea–U.S. government-led infrastructure initiative. This program aims to connect major U.S. projects with Korean companies, investors, and strategic financing partners.

The inclusion of Riverside in this initiative highlights its strategic importance as NOVONIX advances customer qualification, production infrastructure, and funding arrangements for its U.S. manufacturing goals. The project was among approximately 10 U.S. initiatives identified through discussions with the Republic of Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation.

Selected projects were introduced to Korean construction groups, trading companies, and infrastructure investors at a seminar in Seoul on 27 August 2026. While inclusion does not guarantee funding or commercial agreements, it expands the pool of industrial and financial groups considering involvement in Riverside.

Scaling a battery-materials manufacturing facility requires significant capital before reaching commercial volumes. NOVONIX is pursuing customer offtake agreements, government support, equity funding, and other financing channels to develop the project. The company has shifted its focus to synthetic graphite after divesting its Battery Technology Solutions Business in April 2026.

Riverside, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is planned as a large-scale North American facility for producing high-performance synthetic graphite used in lithium-ion battery anodes. The long-term goal is to expand the site to a capacity of 20,000 tonnes per annum. Synthetic graphite is a critical input for batteries, with global production predominantly in Asia.

NOVONIX's investment strategy includes the strategic value of locating production near North American battery and automotive manufacturers. The company plans to use proprietary continuous graphitization technology to produce battery-grade material with lower energy requirements than conventional processes.

The Riverside project is in a capital-intensive development phase, with customer qualification being a key milestone. On 11 June 2026, NOVONIX delivered a mass-production qualification sample of synthetic graphite anode material to Panasonic Energy, marking a significant stage in the qualification process. Commercial deliveries depend on successful qualification and production readiness.

As of 30 June 2026, NOVONIX reported USD 59.5 million in cash and cash equivalents, down from USD 79.9 million at the end of December 2025. The company recorded a USD 24.6 million net loss for the six months ended 30 June 2026, reflecting ongoing spending on Riverside's development.

NOVONIX operates in a policy environment focused on establishing domestic critical-mineral and battery supply chains. In April 2026, the U.S. Government certified USD 103 million in tax credits for Riverside. While these policies support U.S.-based production, NOVONIX must still demonstrate product qualification, production reliability, competitive costs, and sufficient financing.

The next phase for NOVONIX will be defined by operational milestones, including Panasonic qualification, Riverside commissioning, and evidence of commercial production readiness. Funding remains a critical consideration, with cash reserves providing near-term flexibility but additional capital needed for project scaling.

NOVONIX is concentrating on U.S.-made synthetic graphite, with Riverside central to its commercial ambitions and capital needs. The South Korea–U.S. initiative offers potential for strategic partnerships and financing discussions, while the company navigates a challenging development phase.
