POSCO Future M has signed a $4.5 billion long-term supply deal with Samsung SDI for lithium iron phosphate cathode materials, doubling their previous agreement's volume.

South Korea's POSCO Future M Doubles LFP Cathode Supply Deal with Samsung SDI

POSCO Future M has entered a long-term agreement with Samsung SDI to supply lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode materials valued at approximately 6 trillion won (around $4.5 billion). This agreement expands the previously tentative deal from August, transitioning from a single-product focus to a comprehensive supply framework that includes multiple cathode and anode materials.

The contract, announced on the 6th, involves supplying secondary battery materials, including LFP cathodes. Although specific volumes were not disclosed, the contract's value implies a significant increase from the 190,000 tons initially agreed upon for the 2027–2032 period. The August agreement was estimated at about 3 trillion won ($2.2 billion).

This marks the first comprehensive agreement between POSCO Future M and Samsung SDI, consolidating individual material agreements. The companies have expanded their 2023 supply agreement to include LFP cathodes in addition to the existing nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) focus. Future plans include cooperation on lithium-manganese-oxide (LMO) cathodes and synthetic graphite anodes. POSCO Future M anticipates a 45% increase in supply volume to Samsung SDI compared to the existing contract.

The agreement is also strategic in the context of tightening battery supply chain regulations, particularly in the U.S. It enables Samsung SDI to secure cathode and anode materials that comply with Non-Prohibited Foreign Entity (Non-PFE) requirements, facilitating access to subsidies like the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (AMPC).

POSCO Future M benefits from confirmed long-term volumes, improving factory utilization and planning for facility expansions. The company is investing 357 billion won ($266.7 million) in a new synthetic graphite anode plant in Vietnam and a spherical graphite processing facility in South Korea, set to begin commissioning in 2027.

LFP batteries are increasingly in demand for mid-to-low-priced electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS), valued for their cost-effectiveness, long cycle life, and stability. The demand for LFP batteries in ESS is rising with increased power consumption from AI data centers, and their adoption in entry-level EV models is growing.

With this agreement, POSCO Future M supplies cathode and anode materials to all three major South Korean battery makers. It recently signed a deal with SK On for LFP cathode materials worth 1.0742 trillion won ($802.6 million) for 2027–2029, and maintains a trading relationship with LG Energy Solution.

POSCO Future M is unique in South Korea for its ability to supply a wide range of cathode materials, including ternary and diverse cathodes like LFP and LMO, as well as both natural and synthetic graphite anodes. This versatility is a competitive advantage in the EV and ESS markets.

POSCO Group's value chain supports these agreements, with operations from lithium brine in Argentina to graphite mining. The group aims to enhance cost competitiveness and quality of LFP cathodes using lithium from its Argentine operations.

A POSCO Future M official stated that the agreement consolidates major supply contracts into one, providing a foundation for systematic operations. The official emphasized the strategic partnership with Samsung SDI and the strengthening of POSCO Group's internal value chain to solidify its market position.

In a challenging battery materials market, POSCO Future M has improved earnings visibility by securing large-scale long-term volumes. The company plans to use its collaboration with Samsung SDI to expand agreements with global battery and automaker customers.
