Researchers at Tomsk Polytechnic University, in collaboration with Chinese scientists, have developed a non-invasive glucose monitoring patch utilizing advanced carbon materials. This innovative wearable technology shifts glucose monitoring from blood to sweat, offering a less intrusive method for real-time health management.

Traditional glucose testing involves painful finger pricks and cumbersome equipment. The new smart patch addresses these issues by integrating a flexible, self-powered system that combines carbon nanotubes with a 2D metal-organic framework based on nickel. This material composition allows the patch to accurately measure glucose levels in sweat within five seconds, filtering out other chemical interferences.

In trials, the patch demonstrated accuracy comparable to professional-grade equipment, successfully tracking glucose fluctuations during a 40-minute exercise session. While not yet a replacement for clinical diagnostics, it provides a reliable means of monitoring glucose trends without the need for needles.

Designed for wearability, the patch is both flexible and durable, capable of functioning with minimal perspiration. Researchers are currently optimizing the adhesive and sensor longevity for everyday use. Published results in the Chemical Engineering Journal indicate promising outcomes, though further clinical trials are necessary before commercial availability.
