VoltaXplore shifts 21700 battery cells from EVs to defense
VoltaXplore is redirecting its 21700 lithium-ion cells from electric vehicles to defence drones and unmanned ground vehicles, supporting testing and qualification at its 1-MWh facility.
VoltaXplore, a subsidiary of NanoXplore Inc., is redirecting its focus from electric vehicles to defense applications for its 21700 lithium-ion cells. These cells, originally intended for mass-market EVs, will now be used in defense drones, unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), and portable electronics. This strategic shift allows VoltaXplore to meet specialized demand without the capital requirements associated with EV-scale production.
The Montreal-based company emphasizes high power, specialized performance, and secure supply chains for Canadian and US defense sectors. Its existing facility, operational since 2022, serves as a 1-MWh production and development line for prototyping, testing, and performance analysis. Interested parties are currently testing and qualifying the cells.
VoltaXplore's strategy represents a departure from its initial EV ambitions. Established in 2021 to develop graphene-enhanced lithium-ion batteries for electric transportation, the company shifted focus after NanoXplore acquired Martinrea's 50% stake in 2023. Although a gigafactory was planned to begin production in 2026, this has not yet materialized.
The demand for defense applications is bolstered by Canadian procurement preferences and the need for secure domestic battery supply. Natural Resources Canada supports NanoXplore's ultra-high-power 21700-cell initiative, valued at approximately C$3.44 million, with a total project value of about C$4.69 million. The long-term goal includes reaching up to 2 GWh of production.
In September 2025, VoltaXplore signed a letter of intent with Volatus Aerospace to supply Canadian-made cells for next-generation unmanned aircraft. The collaboration aims to enhance endurance, charging speed, and cold-weather performance.
