Use of recycled carbon black increasing, says tire producer
A major tyre producer reports increased use of recycled carbon black in their products.
Pirelli & C. S.p.A. is advancing its use of recycled carbon black (rCB) in tyre production through a collaboration with Bolder Industries, Inc. The initiative involves processing scrap tyres from Pirelli's North American facilities using Bolder Industries' pyrolysis technology. The recovered carbon black is then reintegrated into Pirelli's tyre manufacturing, reducing reliance on virgin carbon black and enhancing raw material efficiency.
This program is part of Pirelli's broader circular strategy, which aims to expand the use of recovered materials across its global production network. Claudio Zanardo, CEO of Pirelli North America, emphasizes the company's focus on integrating recycled materials into production processes without compromising performance and quality.
Tony Wibbeler, CEO of Bolder Industries, highlights the collaboration as a scalable approach to tyre-to-tyre circularity that meets performance and certification standards. This initiative aligns with Pirelli's goal to increase the use of recycled and bio-based materials, aiming for over 80% in its best-performing products by 2030 and 40% across total production.
Pirelli's commitment to sustainable materials reflects ongoing industry efforts to enhance environmental responsibility in manufacturing.
