Innofibre partners with PyroGenesis to convert biomass into syngas
Innofibre is collaborating with PyroGenesis to convert biomass into syngas, focusing on the development and commercialization of bio-based products. This collaboration is significant for the advanced carbon materials sector as it enhances the production and application of biochar, a valuable carbon material.
Innofibre Centre d’innovation des produits cellulosiques, based at the Cégep de Trois-Rivières in Quebec, is collaborating with PyroGenesis Canada Inc. to convert contaminated biomass into synthetic gas (syngas). This initiative aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by utilizing PyroGenesis' high-temperature waste-to-energy gasification technology.
The collaboration is part of the launch of Innofibre’s new $14-million pre-commercial research and pilot-stage facility. This facility is reportedly the only one in North America equipped to simulate industrial production conditions. Innofibre's objectives include advancing the development and commercialization of bio-based products, biomaterials, biochar, waste valorization, decarbonization, and tailings recovery, particularly in the forestry and agriculture sectors.
Contaminated biomass often contains substances like paint and solvents, which are mixed in landfills or added to wood products during manufacturing. Successfully processing this biomass could expand the feedstock available for syngas production. Syngas can be used to generate electricity, create synthetic fuels, or produce other products.
