Novacium and Tokai COBEX are collaborating to evaluate a silicon and synthetic graphite anode material solution in France, aiming to enhance lithium-ion cell energy capacity.

HPQ Silicon Inc. and its strategic partner, NOVACIUM SAS, have initiated exploratory work with Tokai COBEX Savoie to evaluate an integrated anode material solution. The collaboration focuses on combining silicon-based anode materials with battery-grade synthetic graphite, both produced using low-carbon processes in France.

NOVACIUM, a French deep-tech company, aims to leverage its expertise in silicon-based anode materials to enhance the energy capacity of lithium-ion cells. Tokai COBEX contributes its synthetic graphite, which remains the dominant material in lithium-ion anodes due to its theoretical specific capacity of approximately 372 mAh/g. Silicon, however, offers a theoretical capacity of about 4,200 mAh/g, presenting a significant opportunity to increase cell energy density.

The joint evaluation seeks to determine if these materials can create a durable, low-carbon anode solution that reduces Europe's reliance on external materials and supply chains. The proximity of NOVACIUM in Solaize and Tokai COBEX's R&D center in Vénissieux is expected to facilitate collaboration, shorten testing cycles, and accelerate technical progress.

Currently, the collaboration is limited to exploratory technical work without any contractual obligations. Dr. Jed Kraiem, Chief Operating Officer of NOVACIUM, stated the goal is to verify the effective combination of their silicon-based anode material with French synthetic graphite, potentially leading to a sovereign, high-performance, and low-carbon anode solution.
